  • The Most Powerful Meditation Experience in Barcelona

The Most Powerful Meditation Experience in Barcelona

Barcelona is famously known for its vibrant culture and cuisine. Tapas, anyone? I love how easy it is to indulge in this city, but it’s equally as important to have well-being rituals in place. Balance is certainly key here. Although it’s common to find yoga studios, spas, and all of your typical wellness-related activities around the city, there is one practice that is unlike all the others. In my opinion, it’s the most powerful meditation experience in Barcelona. Let me explain..

Suco session in action on a rooftop terrace in Barcelona

    What is Suco?

Suco is a community founded and led by South African native, Jamie Beron. It’s a dynamic wellbeing practice that disrupts traditional fitness and meditation in an immersive way. In addition to movement, various science based practices are combined with electronic music, breath work, and visualization techniques. It’s a real game changer. As a result, participants cultivate a deeper connection to themselves while experiencing heightened feelings of love, gratitude and belonging.

A Suco session has two main segments: a yoga practice and the active dance meditation. Attendees are welcome to join both or only attend the active meditation. However, I suggest doing both for the most profound experience. Go big or go home. Amirite?

Suco Session attendees engaged in a powerful meditation experience

Why is this the most powerful meditation experience in Barcelona?

It’s impossible to leave a Suco session as the same person you did when you arrived. I say that in the best way possible. Key takeaways include feeling more rooted in your authentic self and an increased sense of personal well-being. Furthermore, Suco delivers valuable reminders to be present in your body and see beauty in the world around you. Yes, even in trying times. But wait, there’s more!

The atmosphere is always full of welcoming energy. The venues are remarkably gorgeous. And equally as important, the tunes are on point. Music warms up the crowd in between segments and a DJ wraps up the evening. If you’re lucky, your session may also include live music by local conscious musicians. Regardless, it’s a certified vibe.

Overall, Suco provides a positive space for people of all levels to explore meditation through a unique modality that encourages personal growth, regardless of previous experience. You’ll be hard pressed to find a more powerful meditation experience in Barcelona.

    How to join the movement

Are you ready for one of the most exciting mental and physical meditations of your life? Good. Head to Suco and grab a ticket! Don’t wait, though. They sell out quickly, but host sessions regularly throughout the season.

Discover a unique twist on wellness with this immersive meditation experience in Barcelona. Each session begins with yoga and is followed by various science-backed techniques that combine electronic music, binaural beats, breath work and movement. 10/10 recommend if you’re looking to build community and exercise your mind, body and soul! • Marimurtra Botanical Garden: The Best of Costa Brava

Marimurtra Botanical Garden: The Best of Costa Brava

Transport yourself to another world in less than one hour from Barcelona! Marimurtra Botanical Garden sits on the edge of Costa Brava’s quaint town of Blanes, and possess some of the Mediterranean’s most iconic views. You’ve likely come across this otherworldly destination while searching for things to do in Costa Brava. However, Marimurtra is much more than a scenic backdrop.

A mini history lesson of Marimurtra Botanical Garden

This Game of Thrones-esque garden serves as an important part of scientific and cultural significance. Marimurtra was founded by German industrialist, Carl Faust, in 1924. His goal was to notably advance conservation, dissemination, and research in the field of botany. In fact, more than 4,000 plant and tree species from around the world can be found across the sprawling cliff-side gardens. Carl went on to create the Carl Faust Foundation before his death in 1952. The foundation ensures the ongoing efforts to promote Mediterranean studies of biology and botany. Today, it’s the oldest active scientific garden in Catalonia. Subsequently, it was declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest by the Generalitat de Catalunya. Murimurtra is truly a beautiful piece of Catalonian culture and history.

    What you’ll find

The Landscapes of Marimurtra Botanical Garden

It’s easy to spend an entire afternoon leisurely strolling the pathways. Marimurtra includes three distinct gardens. You’ll find the arid expanses of America and Mexico, the musical bamboo forests of the East, and even the far reaches of Australia. The property offers nearly 10 planted acres of gardens to roam in total. Discover pergolas, ponds, a café, vineyards, and a vegetable garden. And of course, the magnificent Epicurus Stairway leading to the Linnaeus Pavilion.

The Linnaeus Pavilion sits on the edge of the bluffs. Naturally, it boasts one of Costa Brava’s most iconic views of the Mediterranean. This extraordinary vantage point compels people from all over the world to flock to Marimurtra. It’s certainly no surprise that couples decide to exchange wedding vows under its romantic Greek-style architecture. Surely this whimsical corner of the garden has inspired the minds of more than just botanists, but artists alike!

    Events and workshops

Participating in a workshop is one of the best ways to experience the garden! Marimurtra hosts a variety of fun, educational events throughout the month. Kids are welcome for select events, too. Whether you’re interested in cooking, botany, crafts or wellness, there is something for everyone. In addition to workshops, Marimurtra also hosts annual festivals. Tips for a great visit

    • Schedule a visit for morning or late afternoon. This usually ensures the best weather and photo opportunities.
    • Bring water and wear comfortable clothing and shoes.
    • Guided tours are available, but not necessary.
    • Purchase your tickets in-person if you have discount codes or coupons.
    • Parking is extremely limited at the entrance, therefore it’s recommended to take the trolley from the roundabout.

    Tips for families

    • Bring a stroller for younger children. Approximately 80% of the garden is accessible with a stroller.
    • Bring your own snacks & water. Additionally, the café inside the garden also has refreshments available.
    • Photo ops with exotic birds are available for purchase.

Discounts & Free Entry to Marimurtra Botanical Garden

Discounts are not usually offered because tickets are very reasonably priced. However, you can maximize your experience by joining a class. For example, Murimurtra hosts monthly yoga classes. The fee for yoga includes access to the garden for the rest of the afternoon. A yoga class generally costs €11, so it’s a great way to see the garden for only little more than what general admission costs. Win-win!

  • 6 Reasons to Explore Miami’s Enchanting Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden

6 Reasons to Explore Miami’s Enchanting Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden

Miami is one of the world’s top destinations for glistening beaches and sultry nights in the city. Its lush vegetation and tropical climate attract travelers from all over the globe, but there’s one place worth visiting that some may overlook. From pristine gardens to events, educational programs and conservation efforts, this world-class venue has something for everyone. Let’s explore six of the top reasons to visit the enchanting Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden on your next trip to Miami.

The Gate House surrounded by orchids at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden
The Gate House was built in 1938 and was the Fairchild Garden’s very first structure.

What to Expect at the Gardens

    1. Lush Landscapes

The first (and most obvious) reason to visit the Fairchild is to take in the seemingly endless green spaces and floral flair. With a collection of more than 3,400 species, it’s no wonder that this is considered one of the utmost prominent botanical gardens in the country. Among 83 acres of lush greenery, you’ll find a Butterfly Garden, a Rainforest Garden, and the Baobab Tree Grove that boasts sky-high, century-old African Baobab trees. Their impressive height and durability will leave you full of wonder and amazement!

In addition to these larger gardens, there are several smaller gardens that are equally as beautiful. The Edible Garden features an array of fruits, vegetables and herbs native to South Florida, but my personal favorite are the whimsical Orchid Gardens. You’ll find upwards of 50,000 tree-attached orchids in an effort to reestablish a thriving orchid population once damaged by poachers and urbanization. Their Million Orchid Project aims to propagate 1,000,000 native orchids for reintroduction to several public spaces around South Florida. There are a variety of orchids in three main exhibits throughout the “uplands” – the Tropical Orchid Rainforest, Caribbean Jewels, and the South Florida Native Orchid Hammock.

    2. Educational Experiences & Workshops

The Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is not only beautiful, but there’s much to learn about, too! A day spent here serves as an excellent educational tool for anyone interested in learning more about our ecosystems, conservation and horticulture. In fact, the garden offers a wide selection of programs and workshops, many of which are included in admission. Some of the most popular programs are guided tours and bird walks, along with workshop topics like photography and gardening.

For those that wish to take it a step further, you can also participate in unique citizen science projects. These initiatives allow guests to contribute to real scientific research by collecting data on an assortment of subject matters. It’s a hands-on way to learn more about our natural environment while also lending your assistance to meaningful scientific studies.

    3. Family-Friendly Activities

Fear not, families! Your kids will delight in the adventures that await them at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. On any given day there are scavenger hunts, garden tours geared towards children, events, or family picnics taking place. Become a certified explorer and collect new pins for every completed mission! Moreover, if your little ones need to let their inner adventurer out, the Children’s Garden is just the place to be.

    4. Doggie Dates

Fur babies are a part of the family at Fairchild. While most places of such prestige typically restrict access to pets, they’re more than welcome to join the festivities here. In fact, Fairchild hosts a myriad of special events just for you and your pup. Aside from strolling the gardens, past events have included a Dog Bazaar, pet portraits, glow nights, and more!

    5. Conservation Efforts

Since its inception in 1938, the Fairchild has been a pioneer in research and conservation worldwide. Their current projects include a high level of community involvement from university faculty and volunteers, to K-12 and university students. Likewise, your presence at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden supports their mission to spread awareness and continue funding important projects for the future. Think of your visit as an enjoyable way to help preserve this living laboratory.

Be sure to stop by the Rare Plant House to see a collection of the world’s most endangered plant species. Many of these are on the brink of extinction in their native habitats, however, visitors are encouraged to learn about how they can help protect them.

    6. Unique Events & Exhibits

Throughout the year, the Fairchild hosts a fabulous lineup of events and exhibits. From cooking and painting classes to yoga and succulent arrangement workshops, there’s always something fun on the agenda.

Similarly, the International Mango Festival, Gala in the Garden, and the Festival of Chocolate are some of their most popular annual events! In addition to these exciting events, the Fairchild also hosts a variety of rotating exhibits and installations.

Wondering where everyone is getting those beautiful sunflower field photos in Miami? Just south of Kendall you’ll find one of the most insta-worthy sunflower fields, accompanied by an awesome kid-friendly U-pick farm that’s fun for the whole family.

    About The Berry Farm

The Berry Farm has been an essential part of the Redland farming community for over 60 years. It’s a great place to spend the day picking fresh strawberries, shopping local produce, catching live musical performances and letting the kids play. With a brand new playground added to the hayrides and bounce pad, there’s much for your little ones to enjoy. And of course, you can’t come to Miami without taking a stroll through The Berry Farm’s beautiful sunflower fields. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head to the juice bar to quench your thirst or indulge in one of their delicious deserts or tasty brunch menu offerings.

    Seasons

Sunflowers are available all year round but strawberry season takes place December through May. Off season begins at the end of May and lasts until September 1st. Do note, although The Berry Farm is closed from May-September, you can still book the property for private events. Festivals are held throughout the year, so check their calendar for dates and plan accordingly!

What Makes This the Most Insta-Worthy Sunflower Field and Farm in Miami?

Visitors love coming to The Berry Farm to pick fresh sunflowers as much as they love getting that perfect snapshot. The sunflower field is as expansive as it is impressive and throughout the year they erect Instagram worthy set-ups just like this one. Aside from the flower fields, we love their pink tractor, 5-acre corn field maze, farm fresh produce and string lights. Hello, ambiance! For the foodies out there, you can look forward to everything from strawberry shortcakes to avocado toast and full racks of ribs. There’s a little bit of something for everyone here!

    Getting There

The Berry Farm is located a mile away from Pinto’s Farm, another popular destination known for their kid-friendly activities and animals. If you’re coming from Miami International Airport, it’s about a 30 minute drive with no traffic, but Uber is not recommended.

    When To Go

Depending on the experience you’re looking for, you’ll need to plan your visit according to the season. In my personal experience, March was the perfect time to visit. Both the strawberries and sunflowers were in full bloom and the weather was mild (for Florida).

Pro tip: arrive as the farm opens to avoid crowds and capture the best lighting for photos. The sun rises from the east and will perfectly light you and the sunflowers in the direction they face.

  • How to Spend Under $500 for a Key West Weekend Getaway

How to Spend Under $500 for a Key West Weekend Getaway

If you’ve checked hotel rates in Key West lately, you may have had heart palpitations like I did. My husband and I were trying to decide where to spend our 5th wedding anniversary modestly, but after an extensive google search, Key West didn’t seem likely. Over the last few years, Key West has exploded in popularity. To add to that, Floridians are flocking to local travel destinations more than ever since the pandemic hit. So when hostels are getting upwards of $400 per night in high season (yes, you read that correctly – hostels), you’d be hard pressed to find anything less than that on the island. Imagine how thrilled we were when we figured out a way to have an unforgettable weekend getaway in Key West for under $500 including accommodations and activities!

Why is it so expensive to stay in Key West?

According to Booking.com, the average cost per night for a 3-star hotel in Key West is $411/night and $610/night for 4-stars. You might be used to paying $400+ per night. However, you’re not necessarily going to get the kind of amenities that rate might offer you in other destinations. Key West is only about 8 square miles, so understandably lodging options are limited. The Keys also consistently rank in multiple spots of the top 10 most expensive places to live in Florida. With peak season only lasting a few months, businesses have no choice but to price accordingly. This is usually the case with small islands, especially as supplies can be limited. Lastly, and most obviously, Key West is a highly coveted tropical destination that packs a fun punch in a rather small area.

Is Key West is worth visiting?

Hopefully the reality of expenses didn’t deter your travel plans. The truth is, Key West is an incredible place to visit and it’s entirely possible to have an amazing trip that doesn’t break the bank. It’s beautiful, tropical and one-of-a-kind. Heck, Bob Dylan even wrote a song about it! It’s not only enchanting, but contains a good deal of history, too. Whether you plan to visit for a birthday, bachelorette or a relaxing weekend getaway, there’s something for everyone. In fact, visitors can enjoy an array of activities from water sports to nightlife, art, dining, historic sites, and nature.

Sunrise in Key West - dezistyle
Key West sunrises are a special experience.

Every Key West travel guide will tell you where to catch the best sunset, but not many mention how incredible the sunrises are.

The calming sound of waves lightly lapping against the shore, the symphony of birds and crickets, the chickens clucking, and a gentle breeze that tickles the sea oat grass.

It’s something of a spiritual experience that I highly recommend. Set your alarm and drink one less rum punch the night before to enjoy a magical morning with mother nature.

After sunrise we spent our mornings leisurely riding bikes to breakfast, followed by afternoons near the beach. The island is small so getting around is rather quick and easy. The evenings were a perfect time to peruse the shops until we found a place to have dinner. Indeed, one of our favorite aspects of dining out in Key West was the laid-back atmosphere. More often than not, you’ll find live bands playing trop-rock music in each establishment – a fun perk to dining out or bar-hopping if you ask me! To add to that, Key West is both family-friendly and fiesta-friendly, so even if you’ve got kids in tow theres no shortage of fun to be had.

    Getting There

If you’re within driving distance, the road trip alone is an exciting part of the adventure. From Miami, Key West is only 160 miles, much of which you’ll find yourself surrounded by sparkling blue ocean. Of course there are some interesting pit-stops along the way to dine by the sea, stop for souvenirs or rest beachside. On the other hand, do note that there are also long stretches with nowhere to stop. If you don’t plan on stopping, the wise move is to drive down with a full tank of gas and have a few snacks on hand to make the trip seamless. Additionally, it’s important to plan your arrival and departure times with rush hour in mind. There is one lane each way in many parts of the route and it can get congested during peak hours/days.

    Fun Fact:

You will cross 42 bridges when driving from Miami to Key West, with one being 7 miles long!

Seven Mile Bridge is the longest segmental bridge in the world!

How to spend under $500 on a weekend getaway

Okay, so here are the juicy details you’ve been waiting for! After hours of (disappointing) research on the internet, we had a moment of ingenuity. What if we didn’t actually stay in a hotel?? I follow a couple of road trip accounts online that highlight cute camper vans and have always dreamed of doing a trip in one myself. Shout out to @vanlifecamper & @vanlifevirals for the inspiration!

It didn’t take long to find the perfect rental company for our Key West weekend getaway. Ondevan had one van remaining for the weekend and The Runa fit all the parameters we required: price, mileage package, great reviews, amenities, cleanliness, and pick up location. The total cost for three days/two nights was only $377 total! This included the van, basic insurance, tax, cleaning fee, a 200 mile package, as well as some other comfort and convenience amenities. Gas cost us about $60 total to get from their Hallandale Beach pick up location to Key West and back. Once we arrived in Key West we only got around on bicycles or by walking so the van was parked for the duration of our stay there. I couldn’t believe it was actually possible to stay in Key West for the weekend *with a beach front view* for under $500!

    Insider Tips:

    • The Southernmost Pointe Buoy is a very busy tourist landmark, but a Key West weekend wouldn’t be complete without the photo op, right? In peak season, there’s a long line of people waiting to snap a picture at all hours of the day. Beat the crowd (and the heat) by visiting first thing in the morning. Alternatively, you could take a photo in front of a miniature replica of it at the Southernmost Point Bar less than 500ft away.

    • Parking can be difficult to find in non-residential areas, plus you’ll get a more intimate experience with the island traveling by bicycle like the locals do. We got a great deal at The Bike Shop on Truman Ave. ($12/per day).
    • As the sun goes down Mallory Square becomes crowded with tourists vying for a spot along the dock. To enjoy a peaceful, unobstructed sunset like a local, head to Zachary Taylor State Park. Entry for bikes is $2.50 per person ($4/car) and it gives you all-day access to enjoy the beach, trails, BBQ pits and historic fort.

    • The best insider tip I can recommend is to rent a camper van! Clearly we found this to be an extremely useful travel hack. However, if you know of another way to spend an entire weekend getaway in Key West for under $500, leave a comment and let me know! 😉

  • The Best 24 Hour Staycation in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea

The Best 24 Hour Staycation in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea

The best staycations are the ones where you don’t have to go far or think hard to have a good time, relax and recharge. We’ve called Boca Raton, Florida home for the last six months so Lauderdale-By-The-Sea was a no-brainer for us when deciding where to escape for a 24 hour reboot. Away from the hustle and bustle of Ft.Lauderdale proper, but still located in prime beach front real-estate, Lauderdale-By-The-Sea is the perfect staycation combination of fun and sun.

    Greater Ft.Lauderdale’s Charming Beach Community

Lauderdale-By-The-Sea is about a 12 minute drive north of The Bonnet House Museum & Garden, the Galleria Mall and major hotels like The W. It’s truly more like a charming seaside village reflecting Florida’s mid-century architecture and laid-back vibes. In fact, with less than 6,700 residents in it’s 1.5 square mile radius, it’s a world of a difference than it’s neighboring cities of greater Ft.Lauderdale and Miami.

DeziStyle Lauderdale By The Sea Beach Front

Here you’ll find beachy cafes, local shops, live music, farmers markets, and renowned coral reefs for scuba diving and snorkeling. In fact, it’s recognized as Florida’s beach diving capital! It certainly has a small town feel but with big vacay vibes.

    Insider’s Guide

Should you decide to peel yourself away from the hotel, Lauderdale-By-The-Sea has a number of restaurants, bars, specialty shops and local activities to choose from. Here are some of my favorites!

    EAT:

Aruba Beach Cafe – Laid back Caribbean style seafood restaurant situated right on the sand with live music and entertainment 7 days a week.

Taco Craft – My personal favorite! Be sure to try their house made tortilla chips with salsa, the braised oxtail empanadas, and the chorizo tacos – OMG!

Sloans Ice Cream – A colorful ice cream, candy & gift shop. You can even support my sister’s whimsical company, Happi Crafts, when you purchase a “sprinkle spewn”! #supportlocal

Anglins Beach Cafe & Pier – A casual beach shack and bar with ocean views, live music and access to Anglins Pier.

Kilwins – Old fashioned confectionaries like ice cream, chocolates and other handmade sweets. Try the home made candied apples or the freshly made waffle cones!

    Anglins Beach Cafe & Pier

    PLAY:

Dancing by the sea – Danny Carter hosts his popular dance classes on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month from 5-7pm (Nov-May). Free lessons in Swing, Salsa, Tango and Ballroom.

Snorkeling & scuba diving – Revered as the best beach diving location in all of Florida, you’ll find a vibrant ocean habitat complete with coral reefs just 100 feet off the shore!

Shipwreck Expedition – For a true adventure, grab your scuba gear and explore the S.S. Copenhagen shipwreck, a British cargo steamer that sunk in 1900. The wreck is, by far, the most popular underwater preserve in Florida with an estimated 10,000 visitors per year.

Farmers market – Hop over to El Prado Park every Sunday to find an array of local vendors and fresh finds from 9am-2pm. (Dec-May)

    Getting Around:

Getting around Lauderdale-By-The-Sea is rather easy considering its size. Depending on where you stay, you can walk or bike to the main strip. Alternatively, you can hop on the free Pelican Hopper Shuttle Bus. View their scheduled times and pick up locations here. Car parking can be rather limited, so it’s best to leave that as a last resort option.

    Where to Staycation in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea

The Plunge Beach Resort had everything we were looking for in a Lauderdale-by-the-Sea staycation. From modern rooms to sparkling pools, beach front dining and free amenities, it checked all the boxes! We usually work a bit, even while on vacay, so it was nice to have unlimited wifi throughout the hotel. We also had an in -room work space to accommodate our busy schedules, which came in handy. The point of a staycation is to relax though, and we did just that. The resort offered us a chance to really unwind without the need to leave the property. Once we checked-in, we headed straight for the water!

DeziStyle Lauderdale-By-the-Sea Staycation at Plunge Beach Resort Pool

Luckily the resort features two swimming pools located directly at the sands edge and only steps away from our room. The water was warm and there were plenty of pool noodles, towels and lounge chairs for everyone to enjoy.

When you make your way to the beach, don’t forget to take advantage of their complimentary beach chairs, umbrellas and volleyball nets. To add to that, on select days they even offer free beach yoga! Just check their website for scheduling.

    Dining at Plunge Beach Resort

One of the things I loved most about our Lauderdale-By-The-Sea staycation was being able to jump out of the shower and be at dinner in a matter of minutes. Backflip Beach Bar & Kitchen is located – you guessed it – right on the sand. The atmosphere is casual but the food is delightful. The tacos were tasty, burgers were delicious, the drinks were stiff, and the yucca fries were surprisingly legit! Side note, our waiter was actually a member of a popular 90’s band. The rumor is, he’s been known to perform live on occasion, too!

For breakfast, Bean and Barnacle offers easy grab-n-go items like pastries, breakfast sandwiches, Starbucks coffee, juices and even gelato! However, if you’ve got a hankering for something different you’ll find a plaza with First Watch (cafe), Publix and Dunkin’ Donuts conveniently located across the street. Furthermore, Plunge is only a direct half mile walk from the main strip, making it an enjoyable beach side stroll if you’re up for it.

    The Stay

As any parent knows, traveling with a 3 year old in tow adds a different dynamic to travel. Hence the importance of finding accommodations that would make our stay as easy as possible for all of us. I truly loved this resort because the guests were a blend of couples, friends and families. Plus, the overall vibe is hip, eclectic and fun.

We chose The Bungalow Queen Suite for its close proximity to the pools/beach, queen beds and kitchenette. Of course we didn’t plan to do much cooking on our stay, but it’s nice to have the option, especially for parents with younger children or those with special dietary needs. Plunge also offers 2 bedroom suites, perfect for bigger families, couples and larger groups.

Lastly, let’s get down to one of the most important factors in a staycation experience. I don’t know about you, but I tend to judge a hotel by their bedding. That being said, I’d easily give Plunge a 5 out of 5 for comfort, cleanliness and quality. We all slept like babies. The next morning Fiona even asked if we could make the bungalow our “new home”. I’d say that’s a win!

    The Perks at Plunge

Earlier I mentioned some complimentary perks and The Plunge comes with quite a few. Included in the resort fee is access to free:

Beach cruisers – Bike ride to El Prado park, Anglins Fishing Pier, Aruba Beach Cafe & more!

On-site parking – Grab a space right by your room for easy loading & unloading!

Beach chairs + umbrellas – Lounge by the pool or sea side comfortably!

Yoga – Stretch your way into staycation mode with free beach yoga!

Beach Volleyball – Grab some equipment & get your game face on!

Wifi – We like our coffee & our wifi strong, luckily Plunge has you covered!

    Other On-Site Features

On occasion, Plunge Beach Resort also hosts events, weddings and conferences. Their lobby doubles as an open concept boho-industrial event space complete with a horseshoe bar. Our Lauderdale-By-The-Sea staycation just so happened to coincide with an Artists Showcase where we were welcomed to meet the artists, view their work and mingle.

Plunge also hosts BBQ’s, karaoke nights & other fun activities so be sure to check their events page!

    Safety Protocols

Since COVID, the travel industry has put safety protocols at the forefront of their mission. As a frequent traveler, I certainly appreciate the efforts. Here are a few ways Plunge is doing its part to make your stay seamless, safe and comfortable.

    • Every room is cleaned with EPA approved sanitizers using a stringent TrustClean protocol
    • Contactless check-out when you provide your email address at check-in
    • Housekeeping will not enter your room for routine cleaning unless a stay is 3+ days
    • Housekeeping disinfects highly trafficked areas at least once per hour (elevator buttons, door knobs, etc.)
    • Reusable items such as pens and notepads are kept at the front desk and are disinfected after each use

    In Summary

Never underestimate the power of a 24 hour staycation, especially in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea. There’s just something about fresh, salty air and the warm, vibrant sun that soothes the soul. Maybe it was the fact that I could breathe deep, or the sensation of sand between my toes and the fluffy pillows that lay beneath my head that night, but I left feeling relaxed and restored. Sometimes all we need is some good food, a little sun and some quality time with our loved ones to set us right again. My wish for you is to enjoy the same!

    The Southernmost Buoy

This isn’t so much an activity as it is an obligatory mission when in Key West. The iconic Southernmost Buoy landmark is recognized as the southernmost point in the continental U.S. What most people don’t know is that an area about 100 feet away called Whitehead Spit is technically the furthest point in the U.S., but is inaccessible to the public. Nonetheless, it makes for a good photo if you’re willing to beat the crowds by going either early morning or just before sunset. See below for a pro tip.

    The Key West Historic Seaport

Catch a glimpse of real life dinosaurs at the seaport. As you stroll the port, you’ll likely notice the giant tarpon hanging out by the boats in search of their next meal. Believe it or not, tarpon (aka Megalops) date back over 100 millions years! These ancient sea creatures can grow to be upwards of 300 lbs, 6ft long and live to be 30-50 years old. Aside from the fish, the seaport hosts live music events, shopping, dining and water sport rentals.

Discover The Bonnet House: Ft. Lauderdale’s Historic Hidden Gem

For over 100 years the Bonnet House Museum and Garden has remained a beautiful yet hidden gem in the heart of Fort Lauderdale Beach, Florida. Both tourists and residents unsuspectingly pass by this secret oasis as they stroll by the famous Ft. Lauderdale strand. Case in point, I’ll admit that even after living in South Florida for many years, I only recently discovered The Bonnet House. In all fairness, the grounds cover an impressive 35 acres but the estate itself lies hidden in plain sight, enshrouded behind lush landscaping. Although it sits across from one of the world’s most famous beaches, it’s only accessible through a gated entrance off the main road. Unless you are deliberately visiting, it’s unlikely you’d stumble upon it by accident. So, if you’re looking for something unique to do in Ft.Lauderdale this week(end), keep reading!

Here’s what you’ll discover at The Bonnet House Garden & Museum

    • A unique shell collection from around the world displayed from floor to ceiling
    • The famed orchid greenhouse
    • Original artworks by Mr. & Mrs. Bartlett
    • A freshwater lagoon & mangroves
    • Swans, turtles, raccoons, birds, iguanas, fish, and the last remaining Brazilian squirrel monkey to roam the property
    • Animal sculptures collected by Mrs. Bartlett from Southeast Asia and Africa
    • Nature trails
    • Lush tropical gardens
    • A gift & snack shop with outdoor cafe-style seating
    • Original living quarters preserved from the era of Mr. & Mrs. Bartlett
    • Tons of Instagram-worthy backdrops!
lush landscaped front entrance of the Bonnet House in Fort Lauderdale, Florida

A brief history of The Bonnet House

The property was purchased in 1895 by Hugh Taylor Birch, a wealthy early settler. However, a shell midden suggests that the Tequesta people inhabited the land as far back as 2,000 B.C. In 1919 Hugh Birch gifted the property to his newlywed daughter, Helen, and her husband, a Chicago based artist named Frederic Clay Bartlett. Shortly after that, the couple began constructing the Bonnet House as a winter retreat where they could pursue their artistic endeavors of writing, poetry, music and artwork. Unfortunately, Helen passed away of breast cancer in 1925. Frederic rarely visited the property after the death of his wife, subsequently. It wasn’t until 1931 that he and his new wife, Evelyn, decided to restore and remodel the house into the whimsical aesthetic you see today. Frederic was a self-taught architect and designed the home as a Caribbean-style plantation with vibrant yellows, blues and coral accents.

The impressive Bonnet House Museum & Garden today

When Frederic died in 1953, Evelyn returned every winter to care for the property. Eventually she gifted The Bonnet House to the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation in 1983. At the time, her contribution was the largest charitable gift in Florida’s history. One year later it was listed on the National Register of Historic places. However, it still remains open to the public for all to delight in. These days the waterfront veranda and garden host everything from exquisite weddings to corporate parties, special events and in-house workshops. Due to development, this historic landmark stands as one of America’s most endangered sites, so get out there and visit while you can. You don’t want to miss The Bonnet House on your next trip to Fort Lauderdale!

Fun fact: the property is named after the bonnet lily flowers that grow here naturally.

There’s something for the whole family

Many historical properties are family friendly, but the kids aren’t necessarily excited to visit. However, the Bonnet House Museum & Garden has a little bit of everything for the whole family to enjoy. Children can roam the grounds on an exploration to find various animals, plant life and fun collectibles like colorful animal statues, paintings, sea shells and more. Additionally, there’s a stroller friendly nature path that encircles the property where you’ll find giant banyan trees, iguanas, birds, raccoons, or the occasional banana spider. Afterwards you can treat yourselves to freshly made fruity ice creams at the gift shop. It’s a safe bet that the resident squirrel monkey just might be hanging out here to say hello and clean up any goodies left behind.

  • Do These 3 Things to Help You Stay Sane & Feel Good During the Pandemic

Do These 3 Things to Help You Stay Sane & Feel Good During the Pandemic

It’s safe to say that we’ve all been experiencing some sort of pandemic fatigue lately. As the weeks and months roll on, it’s become increasingly important to find ways to battle the boredom of monotonous routines, find things that spark joy (thank you, Marie Kondo), and just plain ole’ do things that make us feel good!

We’ve been through all the trends over these past 11 months, from baking banana bread to binge watching Tiger King, but nothing quite satiates these feelings of stagnation like the three things mentioned below. The best part is, you can fit them in everyday, it’s free, and including these as a part of your daily rituals moving forward will benefit your health and well-being long after the pandemic is behind us.

    1. Get outside every day! I prefer to do this first thing in the morning before I start my day. That morning light and air just hits differently and puts me in a good mood. Plus, having a 2 and a half year old can be hectic, so this guarantees that the day won’t slip away from me. *It’s good for the whole family when mama has this time to herself. 😉 Just make it a point to get outside daily, no matter when it is.

    • Go for a walk
    • Ride a bike
    • Get your bare feet in the grass
    • Sunbathe – no need for a bikini, just sit outside and let the warmth of the sun wash over you, even if its for 10 minutes
    • Go for a swim
    • Play a sport – tennis, anyone?
    • Go to the park
    • Tend to your garden
    • You can even just stand outside and breathe. Seriously. No phone, no distractions. Just focus on your breath and let your thoughts wander.
@DesiChance wearing IVL Collective athleisure set

    2. Meditate. I’m not always traditional when it comes to mediation & you don’t need to be either! I can find the inner solace I’m looking for or connection to my higher power when I’m cooking, going for a walk, listening to my favorite music, showering, or even driving.💡 Sometimes that’s where my best ideas come from or how I can zone out completely in what I’ll refer to as my “mind jacuzzi”. Other times, only more traditional styles of meditation will do. Find what works for you and get it in where you can, that’s my motto.

Don’t be afraid to switch things up and use different meditation techniques and styles. Headspace lists a number of styles that you can try to see which appeals to you most. Here are a few examples, but check out their app for more detailed descriptions and helpful guided meditations to get your started.

    • Sound Bath Meditation
    • Zen Meditation
    • Mantra Meditation
    • Yoga Meditation
    • Chakra Meditation
    • Qigong Meditation
    • Vipassana Meditation
    • Transcendental Meditation

    3. Create. Journal your thoughts, goals, or what you did that day. Getting it onto paper is like clearing your mental cache and it feels GOOD! Try making a new recipe, doodle (go ahead and color, no one is judging you for those adult coloring books you bought on Amazon last year), build something, create a photo album (remember those?), or pick up an instrument and improvise a song (yes, Garageband counts!). It’s not about how well you do it, it’s about having fun and stimulating those neurons! 🧠

Full Moon Cacao Ceremony + Sound Healing & Meditation in Los Angeles (Plus Revitalizing Elixir Recipe)

If you’ve been following along on my Instagram, you’ll know I recently attended my very first Full Moon Cacao Ceremony and Sound Healing + Meditation.  If you didn’t know, make sure to follow me @DesiChance to stay current with all my travels, wellness tips, parenting, and unique experiences like this one!

    What is a cacao ceremony?

As this was the first Full Moon of the decade, actually, a Full Wolf Moon Lunar Eclipse, it was a very special time to participate in my first cacao ceremony.  So, what exactly is a cacao ceremony?  When prepared and consumed correctly, and in the appropriate setting, ceremonial grade cacao is used as a method of consciously opening the heart to give and receive more love, clarity, abundance, and connection with self and others.  High-quality, ceremonial grade cacao is a powerful tool when used in conjunction with meditation and intention setting, as it helps to energize the spirit while also stimulating blood flow to the brain and deepening connection to heart and inspiration. Cacao is non-psychotropic, however, it is said that when consumed in these ceremonial settings, it unlocks a blissful state within and releases negative thoughts or emotions and is replaced with acceptance, love and awakening.  You may have already heard that similar emotions are experienced when eating chocolate.  (*Side note, pure raw cacao is not the same as cocoa. Cacao has little to no added sugar or milk products, making it pretty bitter on its own).

Cacao ceremonies can be done alone or in group gatherings.  I use cacao at home to prepare my own elixirs (see recipe below), but was very curious as to how the effects of it would be different in a community setting with others, and with the accompaniment of sound and guided meditation.  To be honest, I was using cacao in my own recipes simply because I enjoyed it and knew of all the health benefits before ever learning about cacao ceremonies.  My curiosity was piqued after researching it more and finding that cacao has been consumed in ancient traditions for thousands of years by Mayans, Aztecs and Amazon natives during their spiritual ceremonies.  It’s believed to be sacred, medicinal and healing.  The group setting is something a bit more ancestral, as it was common practice for the community to come together to create space and practice sacred rituals.

During a cacao ceremony, you will be given a blessed elixir.  Ours was comprised of coconut milk, cacao, maca, cinnamon, and rose, but each shaman or ceremony may make their own unique version. To start the ceremony, our healer began by sharing about the mystic nature of the Full Wolf Moon Lunar Eclipse and what this means for us on an emotional and spiritual level, what we can expect during this time, and how the cacao ceremony will help us heal.  She then led a guided meditation, calling on all the spirits like Pachamama, Isis, Gaia and so on to guide us.  As we held the elixir close to our hearts, an intention was offered to all of us and we were also prompted to call on our own personal intentions, softly whispering it into our cup before taking the elixir and laying down on our mats to begin the sound healing.

    Benefits of Cacao

    • Has a high concentration of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants
    • Increases blood flow and oxygen to the brain
    • Balancing
    • Release energetic blockages
    • Enhances the immune system
    • Releases endorphins
    • Contains a natural & gentle source of caffeine for energy & awakening the senses
    • Improves memory & focus

    Sound Healing

Generally these practices require the participant to be comfortably seated or laying down.  Sound healing uses therapeutic tools like music, vibration, chants, meditation and sometimes even movement to lower stress levels, promote balance within, and improve mood and emotional well-being.  When administered correctly and with the right instruments, sound healing has shown to improve both the physical and emotional health in all ages, from pre-mature babies to nursing home patients, those with chronic stress or anxiety disorders, PTSD and so on.  The audible sound vibrations penetrate the body to promote relaxation, release tension, and help tune your frequency to a more pleasurable and conducive state of being. There are a number of specific sound healing modalities, each slightly varied from one another, but with the same general goal of total mind and body well-being at heart.

Sound baths are something I’ve done before, but this was unlike any of my previous experiences, with the exception of  plant medicine ceremonies, which cacao is considered to fall under as well.  This seemed more aligned with a ceremony led by shamans.  In my past sound bath experiences, crystal bowls were the only source of instruments used, but this ceremony put a myriad of them into play.  Two healers led with chimes and proceeded to take us on a beautiful musical journey using about 10 or so different instruments from didgeridoo’s to gongs, drums, tuning forks, rain sticks, crystal bowls and more!  It was quite beautiful against the faint sound of the water feature in the back of the room.   One peculiar thing I noticed during this sound journey were that the crickets I had seen in the studio earlier in the evening began to chime in during the more intense waves of sound.  It could easily have been overlooked, in fact, my friend who joined me at the ceremony was unaware of this when I brought it up afterwards, but with a recent plant medicine ceremony I had done the month before, I was unintentionally more attuned to the way nature responds during these kinds of  musical “callings”.  The crickets seemed to be reciprocating in a conscious way, and in a manner that felt oddly familiar.  During my plant medicine ceremony last month, the rain and insects seemed to respond in the moments of intensity during the icaros with the same idiosyncrasy. I was so intrigued by this phenomenon, I spent the remainder of my evening researching crickets and their spiritual symbolism, to find the representation of their presence extremely congruent to that particular moment in time.  Could it have been coincidence? Absolultely.  But, I’ll just leave this conversation for another time perhaps.  Nonetheless, it was a beautiful 60 minutes of musical enchantment.

    Takeaway

Sound baths, when combined with meditation and led by experienced practitioners, can be an incredible experience.  Each sound healing journey is different, so go into it with an open heart and no expectations.  At the very least, it will permit you the time and space to clear your thoughts, relax and be present. You may experience some emotions coming up during the ceremony. It’s not uncommon to cry or even laugh sometimes.  Emotional baggage releases itself in many ways.  Do not feel ashamed or try to stifle yourself.  Allow yourself  permission to express these feelings – its healthy!  Think of it as shedding your old skin and stepping into a brand new suit that fits your current state of being better.

  • Quick Tips for Air Travel with Children 2 Years Old & Younger

Quick Tips for Air Travel with Children 2 Years Old & Younger

‘Tis the season for holiday travel, or if you’re like our family, all year long is really travel season.  Whether it be a quick weekend getaway or extended work/play trips, traveling with an infant or toddler adds a whole new set of checklists and logistics to your travel schedule.

As a first time mom (my L.O. is coming up on 18 months), I’ll admit that we’re still figuring this all out, BUT with 13 domestic and international flights under her belt already, including our most recent trip which had us circumnavigate the entire earth, I’d say we’ve had quite a bit of experience thus far.  Our daughter was born in Barcelona, so her first international flight was at only 3 weeks old and she’s been on-the-go ever since!

Traveling with a baby can be stressful before you even make it to the airport – there’s always the fears of being “those people” on the plane with an inconsolable baby or the uncertainty of how you’ll be able to manage getting everything done and arriving on time with so much additional responsibility (any mom knows, baby’s have a knack for soiling their diapers just before you’re finally ready to walk out the door!).  The good news is, with a little preparation, traveling with your little one should be relatively painless, and the more you do it, the better you’ll (both) be at it.

Traveling with an infant and a toddler are obviously quite different.  The older they get, the less they sleep, which means more time to be spent entertaining, feeding, and so on, but here are some of my top travel tips that will help take some of the guesswork out of your next trip and make things just a little smoother, so you can get on with enjoying your time more and worrying less.

    Happy Travels!

Tips for Traveling with an Infant or Toddler

    Before the flight:

    • A child under 2 years old flies for FREE! As long as they travel on your lap, most airlines don’t charge a full-price ticket. Generally domestic flights won’t charge any fees and some international flights may require a small “lap fee”, so take advantage of this as much as you can before you’re required to purchase their own seat! *Check with each airline to find out the perks of traveling with your child before you book.

    • When booking your flight, opt for bulkhead seating or window seats, if possible. Bulk head gives you some much needed extra room, and for longer flights, many airlines can offer bassinets that attach to the wall or seat in front of you, allowing you to be hands-free while baby sleeps!

    • When choosing flights, try to pick times that work with your baby’s natural sleep cycles.  This allows them to stay on a schedule & helps prevent cranky babies – #winning.

    • ALWAYS give yourself extra time to get to the airport/train station/etc.  I can’t stress this enough.  Getting out the door, installing/uninstalling carseats and lugging the rest of your luggage and stroller in and out of your car or Uber is just going to take longer these days.  Not to mention the inconvenient diaper changes and feedings that may arise and the additional time it takes to go through security with these items. Plan accordingly.

    • If you are traveling with a car seat, I highly recommend getting a carseat travel bag that will allow you to easily carry it, while also protecting it from the all the dirt and grime it will encounter in the cargo area during transit. You can pick one up on Amazon for around $15-30.

    • During check-in, attendants may ask or try to collect your stroller at the counter.  Depending on the airline, you almost never have to relinquish your stroller until you are ready to board the plane.  This allows you to keep your baby comfortable, saves your back from carrying them, and gives you some extra space for your carry-on items.  You will give the stroller to an airline rep or baggage handler at the gate, just before stepping onto the plane, and will usually be able to pick it up in the same place as soon as you deboard.  On some occasions, you may have to pick it up at baggage claim, but this is not common in my experience. *FYI strollers are free to fly with and do not count towards baggage allowances.

    • Good news – Traveling with your little one is like getting access to the HOV lane!  Families with babies and small children are usually given priority in security lines and boarding.  Just flag down an attendant and let them escort you to the front of the line.

    • In most cases, the 3 ounce liquid restriction does not apply to you.  This means you can take water bottles intended for the baby, fruit pouches and other baby foods through security without worrying they’ll toss ’em.  Do note, they may need to do a little extra screening in order for you to bring them through, but it’s well worth it.

    • When packing your carry-on items, you’re able to bring an additional bag for the baby.  We use a backpack specifically for our daughter that has all of her diapers changing equipment, snacks, chage of clothes and toys.

    During the flight:

    • Cabin pressure changes may cause some discomfort to your little one’s ears.  A great way to prevent any discomfort is to breast/bottlefeed during take-off and landing when these changes in air pressure can affect them most.  If this isn’t an option, a pacifier is a great alternative, as the sucking motion helps to pop the ears.

    • If your child is still comfortable sleeping in a wrap, bring a baby sling so you can be hands-free in-flight while they nap.  You may even be able to sneak in some Zzz’s if you’re lucky!

    • Don’t overdo it on the toys. Kids are imaginative & can easily be entertained with a few of their own familiar toys, as well as things you can find on board – get creative! *Some airlines offer in-flight toys and activities to keep them busy as well!

    • Don’t be such a stickler to your TV/iPad rules during flights.  An iPad with a few age-appropriate games and videos that can be played offline can keep kids occupied for hours & honestly, its absolutely invaluable!

    • Some flights offer meals and snacks specifically for kids, so you don’t need to lug so much with you.  Contact your airline beforehand to make sure.

    • Airlines like Etihad have on-board nanny services.  These attendants are specifically trained in specialized schools for early childhood development , psychology and sociology, so you can (*literally) rest assured your tots are in good hands.

  • A Comprehensive Guide to Ubud, Bali (and not breaking the law)

A Comprehensive Guide to Ubud, Bali (and not breaking the law)

Traveling to Bali the smart way.

It was love at first sight — truly, madly and deeply.  I’ve never fallen so hard for a destination in my entire life as I have for Bali!  I spent an entire month in the amazing little jungle town of Ubud, nestled smack dab in the middle of the island.  Bali lives up to everything you’ve seen on Instagram and then some..no kidding.  I’m still vibrating with the feel good energy that permeates the air and holding on to the peace and tranquility that so accurately represents the overall theme of the Balinese culture.

If you’ve never had the opportunity to venture to this sacred little space of the planet, there are quite a few reasons to make it a top priority.  That is, if you love great food, unique adventures, dreamy backdrops and meeting laid back, happy people everywhere you go.  It doesn’t hurt that the dollar stretches much further than most other comparably beautiful islands outside of Asia, too.  I’ll admit, the journey from Miami was a long one, but worth every minute of the 30+ hours of travel time it took to finally touchdown in Indonesia.

    Getting to Bali

Unless you live in the Eastern hemisphere, there’s really no way around the arduous voyage.  So, be prepared to spend plenty of time in airports and airplanes by dressing comfortably, bringing your favorite healthy snacks and some reading materials.

*Tip: When trying to find the cheapest routes to Bali, try flying into Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur or other nearby cities first and taking a separate (short) flight into Bali from there.  You may have the best luck searching for the most affordable flight on Monday’s and Tuesday’s, and if your schedule is flexible, try departing between Monday-Wednesday.

Depending on how savvy you are with your flight searches and routes, as well as both the timing and flexibility of your departure and return, you may decide its more useful to book a one-way ticket to Bali.  This is what worked best for me, but sometimes it’s more cost effective to book a roundtrip ticket.

“…And then we were arrested and sentenced to 10 years of hard labor at a prison camp!!”

If you are unsure of how long you may stay in Bali, pay the $35 at the visa counter when you arrive so you have the option to extend your trip.  Do note that the maximum time allowed in Indonesia is 60 days, and if you plan to stay longer than 30 days, you must still renew your visa at a local passport agency.  We had unknowingly miscalculated our stay by one day and although we did actually purchase the extension, we didn’t have them officially extended.  We got flagged at the airport on our way out of Indonesia…And then were arrested and sentenced to 10 years hard labor at a prison camp!!   No, I’m kidding, it definitely seemed a lot more official and scary than it ended up being.  However, its always going to be an unsettling feeling to be escorted to an airport back office with someone in uniform.  The penalty ended up being a 300k rupiah fine, (which sounds like you should definitely freak out), but it’s actually only roughly $20usd and then we were sent on our merry way.  Keep in mind, you pay 300k rupiah for each day you stay over so if you do plan to be in Indonesia for more than 30 days, its worth it to just buy the extension right off the bat and save yourself the trouble.

    And just so you know…

    • The Indonesian government takes the smuggling, using and selling of drugs very seriously and the drug laws are unambiguous and can vary from awaiting 6 months in jail to go to trial, to the death penalty.  Not a line you should really try to cross while you’re in Bali.
    • Gambling is illegal. (although its possible you may run into a cockfight)
    • Pornography is illegal.
    • You must be able to show your legal stay permit/passport at any time should you be asked by an active immigration officer.

However, it may sound harsh but it’s unlikely you’ll ever even encounter a police officer unless you’re blatantly breaking the laws or using your vehicle/motorbike recklessly.

    Where to Stay

First thing’s first, you need a place to call home once you arrive.  Nothing feels worse than traveling all those hours only to be homeless in a new city.  I prefer to at least have my first night or two booked somewhere where I can throw my stuff down, refresh, and get my bearings.  For this reason, my girlfriend and I chose to stay at the Evitel Hotel for two nights while we met with rental companies and viewed villas.  It was also conveniently located, as we could walk to the many shops, restaurants and the local grocery market (Cocomart) just outside the hotel grounds.  As a bonus, our suite overlooked beautiful rice paddies and the rooftop pool and restaurant provided incredible views for watching the sunrise.

I realize most people don’t feel comfortable traveling somewhere without the reassurance of knowing exactly where they’ll be staying ahead of time, but its an excellent way of making sure you’re happy with the overall location and appeal of the accommodations.  Additionally, negotiating a rate in person will almost always ensure you of a much better deal than if you were to purchase it online.  AirBnB is still a great option to book your stay through though and you can find quality listings at really reasonable rates in Ubud, with the help of the traveler reviews.

    Things to consider:

    • Whether you stay at a hotel or rent a villa, choose a property that will facilitate you with the most authentic experience possible.  I actually enjoyed living outside of the main parts of town – in Penestanan.  This allowed me to interact with a bit more of the Balinese culture and some authentic food spots.  I also liked the task of getting around on our moped to run errands, I think it tends to make you feel a little more comfortable exploring more than just your general surroundings.
    • If you rely on wifi for work purposes, be sure to clearly communicate your needs ahead of time.  Even with the best plan, you’re bound to experience a loss of wifi at some point.  These little blackouts don’t usually last long but having the higher speed connection really does make a difference in your overall connectivity. (We paid our homeowner the price of the difference to upgrade his wifi plan for the month so we’d avoid as many issues as possible.  Even so, it’s Bali and sometimes the wifi just doesn’t work well.)
    • I’m going to go ahead and say air conditioning is a necessity.  Not every room might have it but let me tell you how nice it felt to sleep in or come home to a cool, refreshing bedroom after being out in the humid jungle heat all day.  Not all accommodations may have A/C so be sure to include it in your search criteria if its important to you.

    Getting Around

Making your way around Bali is quite simple.  You’ve generally got 4 options: taxi, motorbike/moped, bicycle or walking.  The latter I would not recommend as your main method of transport if you plan to explore more than your general vicinity, to which that would be an utter shame if you do not.  You won’t find Uber here to be like you do in most countries, but taxis are pretty easy to find, not by any such markings, but by the friendly gentlemen usually hanging out on the sidewalks asking passerby’s if they are in need of service. (*Edit: I realize Uber does technically operate here but there are multiple signs displayed around Bali that portray the image that it is banned, as well as multiple reports of Uber drivers being beaten by local taxi drivers, and fake license plate numbers in the Uber app itself for fear of being targeted, making it more difficult to identify which car you are supposed to take.  So although Uber may operate, it is still frowned upon by many locals who believe it takes away from the profit of their own community & have made those driving Uber & those taking Uber, feel intimidated at times, so its best to use a bit of precaution.)   This can get quite pricey though if you are making multiple trips throughout your stay (most taxi’s won’t charge less than 100k rupiah, no matter how short your trip is).  On the contrary, taxis can be great for longer trips, say to Seminyak or other attractions not located in town, as you can generally negotiate very reasonable rates.

“Forget about the nerdy aesthetics, everyone is doing it.”

So, what is the best way to get around Bali?  The answer is one I didn’t initially want to admit to: a motor scooter.  Forget about the nerdy aesthetics, everyone is doing it.  My main concern was driving on the opposite side of the road and trying not to be a granny holding people up as they dart and weave past me in traffic.  I lasted about a week before I finally caved and decided to just do it.  Do as the locals do, right?  Getting that scooter was one of the best decisions we could’ve made though.  We felt like 16 years olds who just discovered the freedom of roaming with a drivers license.  Which, reminds me.. having an international drivers license is not necessary to rent a scooter.  Come to think of it, I’m not sure anyone checked to see if we were even licensed in our own country.  The authorities don’t tend to meddle or bother you as long as you’re safely & respectfully driving, obeying common laws and wearing a helmet.

The cost of renting a scooter for the month was approximately 500,000 rupiah (about $38usd).  We drove it around town without care or concern of gas money, almost every single day.  We could afford such luxury because to fill up our tank only cost about 20k rupiah (a little over a dollar), and we only needed to fill’er up twice!  Remember when I said a one way trip in a taxi cost about 100k rupiah?  Now you know why it’s worth it to just commit to the scooter from the start!  Parking around town is simple as there are plenty of spaces for scooters.  It takes some getting used to, but soon you will find yourself heading to the market to pick up groceries or other items without care.  Hey, if the local men and women can fit a family of four on their scooter, with their chickens hanging off the back, you’ll be able to maneuver just fine.  😉

    “Do as the locals do!”

As for the bicycles, it’s possible to rent those, too.  However, as Bali can have some rather mountainous terrain and unpaved roads, I’d save that for short, local trips to the cafes or going to yoga, but not my main method of transportation.

Things to consider when renting a scooter:

    • Although international drivers licenses are handy in the case of renting a vehicle when abroad, you do not need one to rent a scooter.
    • For those it applies to, driving on the opposite side of the road can be a daunting thought, but have no fear, you’ll adjust quickly.
    • You will see people on scooters without a helmet.  Don’t be one of those people!
    • Parking your scooter around town is super easy and almost always free.  The only time I’ve been charged to park was outside of the locals farmer market, and I’m still not sure if it was just a dude in a neon vest that managed to get $0.50 out of me.  (Those things look official.)
    • You can find petrol at small roadside shops, usually displayed out front in something like old Absolute Vodka bottles…probably next to some bananas and t-shirts for sale.
    • Since you’ll definitely be wearing a helmet while riding on the scooter (riiight??), you might be wondering what you’re supposed to do with it once you park.  You can feel secure leaving it right on your scooter!  Most people just stick them on their rearview mirror and get on with their business.

    Weather & Wardrobe

As the weather stays at a median temperature of about 80 degrees Fahrenheit with moderate to high humidity year round, you don’t have to concern yourself with a diverse wardrobe selection.  Do consider the rainy season though, which generally lasts from December to March.  Ideally, the best months to visit for the maximum amount of sunshine is from July to September.  However if you ask me, any day is a good day to be in Bali.

Packing for Bali should be simple.  Don’t overpack (lesson learned).  You can find anything you need there, and undoubtedly for much less than you’d spend back home.  With the weather being so warm and tropical, you won’t want to wear much, so pack light, breathable fabrics with a loose fit.  And ladies, leave the heels at home.  I wasted precious cargo space on things like my heels and leather jacket, that literally sat in my suitcase unused during the entire month in Bali. (To be fair, I wasn’t sure which country I’d be in next, but damn, I could’ve brought back so much more coconut coffee had I not brought those).  Point being, keep it casual!   U-bud is u-ber relaxed.

There are a few basics I like to travel with, regardless of destination, that make my life easier.

    What to bring to Bali:

    1. Portable bluetooth speaker
    2. Multiple all-in-one converters (with at least one high-quality converter with a low/high wattage switch).  I bring multiple because I use my laptop, camera gear, phone and portable batteries with me for work purposes so I need to charge many devices each day.  For the average traveler you may just require one durable converter.  I prefer to use this one by Brookstone because it works in over 150 countries and has the full 3-prong outlet for charging bigger devices like my laptop.
    3. An extension cord….because you never know where you’ll find outlets in foreign countries.
    4. A good pair of flip flops.  $10 says that’s the only pair of shoes you’ll end up wearing.
    5. My 20 ounce Yeti rambler goes everywhere with me.  Why you ask?
      1. It’s BPA free and an environmentally responsible choice to not produce more waste.
      2. It keeps my beverages hot or cold all day (I especially love having this on a long flight or road trip)
      3. It’s stainless steel and durable as hell! (dishwasher safe)
    6. A good hat to shade you from the sun.  I brought a baseball cap that I could also easily wear under my helmet to shield my eyes from the sun when I drove.
    7. Portable charger.  Never leave home without it. I own two different sizes of the Mophie batteries and they are fantastic.
    8. Mini string lights – Hear me out.  I know its not a necessity, per se, but for under $10 you can carry with you the key to creating a charming ambiance no matter where you are.  These come in a pack of 3 and virtually take up no space.  They’re submersible and can run for over 20 hours on one battery.
    9. A good attitude.  You get what you give so have a positive, open mindset and you’re bound to meet a world full of amazing people.

     Where to Eat

The simple yet delicious menu you’ll find throughout Ubud is one of my favorite parts about Bali.  You’ll find yourself looking forward to each and every meal.  You really can’t beat the fresh, healthy options Ubud offers and the prices will make you want to try everything on the menu because…why not?!    Although I can go off on a tangent here, the food scene was too good not to give it the proper rundown it deserves in it’s very own post — Coming soon (with much more on Bali), so be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss out!

A great hike for introspection and awesome views of the city below.  This trail is not for the faint-hearted or un-experienced hikers, as many parts can be steep and require some climbing, but if you’re up for the challenge, it’s well worth the effort.  Once you reach the top, you may find a notebook containing the thoughts and wishes of past adventurers.  Leave a message to those who will follow in your footsteps!

    Cathedral Rock

Easily one of the most photographed sites in Sedona, Cathedral Rock is great for hiking, photography and meditation, no matter your level of experience.  It’s quite common to see yogi’s making their way down the trail with yoga mats and man-buns in tow.

    Sound Bath

There’s a first time for everything, and if you haven’t experienced the therapeutic calming effects of a sound bath, why not give it a go while you’re in Sedona?  The magic lies within the vibrational tones and energy transferred from chimes, crystal bowls and other instruments that are intentionally directed towards those in need of healing and balancing within.  No sound bath experiences are exactly alike, as each shaman or meditation leader has their own approach or venue for these practices.

    SPA-cation

As one might expect in a healing vortex like Sedona, there are a handful of exceptional spa resorts to choose from.  Many offer day or week-long passes for purchase, even if you are not a guest of the resort.  It’s easy to get in the zone with great amenities like yoga classes, gym, pools, jacuzzi, sauna/steam rooms and massage services, especially when surrounded by such serene views.

*Check out TripAdvisor‘s top Sedona Resort & Spa’s of 2017 for ratings and pricing info.

    Energetic Healing

Healing and aligning oneself is undoubtedly one of the most sought after reasons for visiting Sedona.  It makes no difference if you believe in the powers that be or not, the raw, spiritual nature of Red Rock country works its alchemy without consent to those who sojourn.  However, if you desire to delve deeper into your metaphysical enlightenment, you are in the right place.  This is the mecca of healers, gurus and shamans, available to aid in your spiritual journey.  Choose from a myriad of practices such as reiki, energetic balancing, tarot readings, musical alchemy, reflexology and obtaining ascension tools.

    Farmers Market

Forget WholeFoods, on the weekend, stroll the Sedona Farmer’s Market for live music, fresh produce and artisanal goods.  Take this opportunity to meet other like-minded folks in the community and support local businesses.  Just remember to bring cash and your appetite.

*Be sure to check out their website for more information as their days, times and locations change throughout the seasons.

    Slide Rock State Park

Located 7 miles north of Sedona, Slide Rock State Park is definitely worth taking the day to enjoy and soak up the sun.  Lay out, picnic, explore, swim and slide down the rocks!  For more privacy and less of a crowd, try visiting on an off-day during the week, as it is quite popular during season.  Pictures don’t do this park justice.  You’ll just have to experience it for yourself.

*Please note that this is a state park and entry fees are applicable – for more information please visit the official Slide Rock State Park site.

    Mescal Trail

It’s hard not to feel small once you venture far enough inside the Mescal Trail, into the ‘Red Rock Bowl’.  Although the trails are marked ‘Extreme’, ‘Difficult’, and even ‘Canyon of Fools’, don’t be discouraged.  Amongst the desert cacti and rich red walls, you’ll find avid outdoorsmen running, biking and hiking this 5 mile (roundtrip) trail.  If you’re adventurous, you can climb up to some caverns and plateau’s for spectacular views.

*Read up on the Native American history of the land beforehand for a more interesting experience on the trail!

    Catch a Red Rock Sunset

“There are no rules of architecture for a castle in the clouds.”

Nothing can quite put the cherry on top of a great day, like a beautiful Sedona sunset.  No two are ever alike, yet each one seems to outdo the next.  There are plenty of incredible places to catch the sunset, from one of the many hiking trails to the Airport Mesa overlook, or just in the comfort of your own backyard.

    Namaste.

  • The Quick Guide to L.A. | Fun, Sun & Libations

The Quick Guide to L.A. | Fun, Sun & Libations

Los Angeles is an ever-expanding, evolving mecca for the arts, entertainment, shopping, nature and the culinary arts.  I may not be a Los Angeles native, but I’ve spent the majority of my life living in this crazy, beautiful city and can honestly say, there is still so much to be discovered.  There is a very good reason it holds the reputation as one of the most interesting and sought out destinations in the world.  Regardless of what you may come for, there is something for everybody…you just need to know where to look.  With 47.3 million visitors in 2016 alone, finding that special “thing” can be a bit overwhelming, and at times, like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

Generally speaking, those who are visiting want to experience a combination of three key elements : fun, sun and delicious dishes.  Luckily, Los Angeles just so happens to have that covered.  Whether you’re in town for the weekend or live here full time, if you haven’t checked these spots out already, you’re missing out!  Below you’ll find a cheat sheet to some of my favorite hotspots for each of these categories.

    Indoor Activities

K1 Racing is a good way to get your friends out for a challenge and your blood pumping.  The wait times on the weekends can be obnoxious though, so plan accordingly!

If you’re up for a comedy show, The Laugh Factory, The Improv or The Comedy Store all feature world renowned comics and celebrities.  It’s impossible not to leave with a giant sh*t eating grin on your face.  *Just keep in mind that your entry ticket also requires you to purchase two beverages once inside, although it does not have to be alcoholic.

We can all use an escape sometimes, but are you up for a challenge?  Escape Rooms are the newest trend popping up around town.  With so many to choose from, you could do a different one every day for a month and still not experience them all!

Contrary to popular belief, we actually do get rain in L.A. every now and again.  If the gloomy weather compels you to spend the day at the theater, perhaps you should pay a visit to the TCL Chinese Theater on Hollywood Blvd.  Originally founded by American showman, Sid Grauman, in 1927,  it still stands as an iconic landmark and beautiful display of Chinese artisanship. *Bonus: You can catch a glimpse of the Stars and original handprints of Old Hollywood royalty just outside.

If you’re feeling artsy, hit up the LACMA, The Broad Museum or The Getty Villa.  These are not your average museums, so prepare to be amazed.

    Outdoor Activities

The Grove is a great spot to go for a bite, a trip to the cinema or to walk around the open air shops.  I’d highly recommend making a pit stop to the Farmer’s Market for an array of sweets and savory treats to indulge in, amongst other things.

One of the best ways to really see the city and get a lay of the land is to go on a hike.  My favorite for views are Runyon, Fryman, Will Rogers & Temescal Canyon.  Runyon Canyon is the most centrally located and a popular spot for celebrity sightings.  However, I personally prefer Temescal  Canyon because of it’s proximity to the beach & great ocean views.

Some museums also offer outdoor entertainment like the LACMA’s Jazz night or The Getty Center‘s maze-like garden featuring over 500 plant varieties.  The Getty Villa also has a beautiful outdoor garden to explore.

When you want to combine a little afternoon sunshine with shopping cardio, head to either the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica or The Grove near West Hollywood.  If you’d rather skip the corporate stores for something a little more eclectic and “hipster”, try Melrose Ave.  Here you will also find Crossroads Trading Co., a nation-wide chain of chic second-hand stores, meticulously picked by in-house buyers and sold back to you at a discounted price.

Yoga in the park – Its a concept that only keeps gaining popularity.  Creative new locations spring up all the time : parks, wineries (yes, there is wine involved), rooftops, beaches and more!

I recommend at least one afternoon at the beach.  You can rent bikes, skateboards or rollerblades at shops that are sporadically spread out along Venice and Santa Monica.   Follow the bike path that stretches from Palisades, all the way south to Redondo Beach for unobstructed views of the Pacific. There’s great people watching and a ton of hippie shops to buy cheap souvenirs from, but in general, Venice is just a laid back beach town.

Of course the Santa Monica Pier is a famous landmark. You’ll mostly find pricey rides & fair food here though.  If you’re in the area it’d be worth checking out for bucket-list sake. (3rd Street Promenade is quite charming and just two blocks away).  During the summer months, the pier transforms into a free outdoor jam session on Thursday nights and boasts live performances to picnicking concert-goers on the sand.

*If you’re near the pier or Promenade, you might as well grab a drink at The Bungalow at the Fairmont.  It’s a trendy yet beachy outdoor bar located on Wilshire and Ocean.  Modeled after a beachside bungalow, you can sip cocktails under the twinkling lanterns on the deck, or bring it inside for a game of pool or checkers near the fireplace.

Cinespia’s movie night at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery is an unforgettable experience.  There are now multiple venues that offer this newly trending “movie in the park” idea but the Hollywood Forever Cemetery is one of the OG’s.  Bring a blanket, a picnic basket of your favorite vino and snacks, and prepare yourself for a uniquely awesome evening under the stars..if you dare.

    Libations & Munchies

For 24 hour grub, Kitchen 24 or Mel’s Diner are great for a higher quality of food and atmosphere (as opposed to fast food or IHOP).  If you’re in the valley, Crave Cafe or Jerry’s Deli is going to be your best bet for a late night snack.

Wine tasting is an awesome way to spend the afternoon.  Why not make your way to Rosenthal’s in Malibu?  It’s not your traditional wine tasting venue but it might become one of your favorites.  The weekends bring quite a crowd here during the summer when local bands play and the food trucks show up.  Located on the famous Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), across the street from the Pacific Ocean.

For the “Hollywood” brunch experience, try Chateau Marmont.  Grab a table in the coveted garden terrace and soak up the sun with a mimosa.

Venturing into Downtown LA?  My go-to favorites are Bottega Louie (anytime day or night), The Standard rooftop for a drink, and Perch rooftop deck for sunset appetizers, incredible views of DTLA, and live music.

    Bottega Louie

If you’re on the west side, one of the best spots you can go to enjoy a specialty cocktail with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean is the High Rooftop Lounge at Hotel Erwin in Venice Beach.  There’s no cover charge to get in but expect it to get pretty busy on weekends and during the sunset.  In my opinion, there’s no better place to experience true California golden hour.

Also, you might note that we on the West Side, have quite a few great places to dine.  For a hearty and homestyle cooked breakfast, you’ll love what Flake and French Market Cafe have to offer, along with outdoor patio seating.

There are far too many incredible lunch spots on the west side to name them all but some of my favorite include The Butcher’s Daughter (vegetarian), Cha Cha Chicken, Gjusta, Lemonade and True Food Kitchen.

Skybar (WeHo) might interest you for a drink at the outdoor bar/pool area. There’s great views of the city & you can also hop around to other local bars and restaurants from here.

WeHo (West Hollywood) proudly boasts its gay district, which has been known to throw some fun parties and parades from time to time. The Abbey, SUR or Pump are typically best for good music, stiff drinks and a lively atmosphere, no matter how you identify – its all love.

Food trucks are quickly becoming a part of the local culture.  It’s a great way to eat well and not spend the extra ‘dough’ on the whole restaurant experience.  Follow your favorite food truck’s Twitter or visit a site like this one to get exact locations.  There are also designated nights like “First Friday’s” on Abbot Kinney that feature an endless stretch of food trucks lined up along this trendy little section of Venice on the first Friday of every month.

*And lastly, when you need to satisfy your sweet tooth, don’t be afraid to try one (or all) of these amazing dessert spots!

  • Not all Cenotes are Created Equal : A Quick Guide to the Best Cenotes in the Yucatan

Not all Cenotes are Created Equal : A Quick Guide to the Best Cenotes in the Yucatan

With over 6,000 cenotes dotting the Yucatan Peninsula, there’s no excuse to not visit at least one.  So what is a cenote? (Pronounced seh-no-tay)  These natural swimming pools form when limestone bedrock collapses and exposes groundwater underneath.  The ancient Maya believed these sinkholes to be mystical realms and connectors to the underworld.  It was also their main source of fresh water, making these natural phenomenons an integral part of their survival.  Today, the top cenotes are sought after by locals and travelers for their lush landscapes, refreshing pools, and access to parts of this planet that have been tucked away for eons.  There are many different kinds of formations and sizes, but how do you find these seemingly elusive sinkholes, and which ones are the best?

The Riviera Maya is home to a vast expanse of cenotes that connect to a matrix of underwater cave systems, attracting scuba divers and hydro-lovers alike, all year round.  Most cenotes are on privately owned land and are usually unaccessible to the public without permission.  Luckily, many of the best ones will welcome you for a swim at a nominal fee.  In my experience, a really great way to hit a couple of cenotes and some other archeological must-see’s, is to hire a local tour operator for the day.  With so many great cenotes to choose from, you don’t have to limit your choice to only one.  After all, not all cenotes are created equal.

    Gran Cenote

Cenotes to visit if you want to scuba dive:

    • Dos Ojos has the deepest known cave passage in Quintana Roo, reaching depths of almost 400 feet.  The water temperature generally remains at a comfortable 77 degrees throughout the year and you can find a few varieties of fish, shrimp and even cave bats if you surface to see them!
    • Temple of Doom, also known as the cenote Calavera, is said to resemble the shape of a skull when the sunlight hits just right through the crevices, creating the image of two eyes and a mouth.  Discovering fossils along the dive is said to be one of the more unique traits of this dive spot.
    • The Pit might seems like a small cenote from the looks of it up top, but after an 18 foot drop into “The Pit”, you will find a world of wonder below.  This is part of the deepest cenote in the area, connected to Dos Ojos, there are many “rooms” along the way to discover.
    • Pet Cemetery is one of the more isolated cenotes to get to and is recommended for more experienced divers, as some shallower parts can be a bit tricky to maneuver in.  However, the stalactites and stalagmites are incredible to witness and the waters are crystal clear.
    • Dream Gate is also a cenote dive recommended for only advanced divers as there are shallow waters and imperative buoyancy control needed.  The main attraction is the “Hall of Mirrors” which features thousands of stalactites hanging from what looks like an expansive black mirror.

Cenotes to visit if you want a less touristy experience:

    • Gran Cenote has a laid back vibe and a much bigger area to explore than cenotes like Ik Kil.
    • Dream Gate is probably not a cenote on the top of your to-do list, as it’s limited accessibility makes it hard for people to get to, making it all the more enticing for those looking to visit the off-the-beaten-path places.
    • Cenote Chaak Tun is an underground cenote with plenty of nooks, crannies and chambers to discover.
    • Cenote Escondido or “Hidden Cenote” can be found via Cenote Cristal in Tulum.  This is more of an open cenote that blends with the natural jungle environment surrounding it.  You may get lucky and spot a family of spider monkeys or exotic birds while you swim!
    • Cenote Azul was hands down my favorite cenote (in comparison to Ik Kil & Gran Cenote).  Once the busy season is over, this is considered one of the less touristy to visit, that also has one of the most exposed surface areas, making it big enough for many people to enjoy.  There are also multiple pools and cliffs to jump from.
    Gran Cenote

Cenotes to visit if you want to see stalactites and stalagmites:

    • Dos Ojos is arguably one of the most popular for many reasons, including their impressive museum of caverns, stalactites and stalagmites.
    • Gran Cenote has beautiful stalactites and stalagmites that can be seen perfectly through the crystal clear water.
    • Dreamgate is home to the famous “Hall of Mirrors”.
    • The Grutas de Loltún isn’t technically a cenote but its a great way to explore an underground cave system, including the stalactites and stalagmites, engravings and cave art without getting wet!

    Gran Cenote

Cenotes to visit if you want to see marine life:

    • Cenote Azul is not only a tranquil place to spend the afternoon, but it is also home to a variety of fish, most notably the little guys that like to nibble at your feet.  Coincidently you’ll see plenty of “fish pedicure” places along 5th Ave in Playa del Carmen using the same kind, so you’ll really be getting the bang for your buck here.
    • Dos Ojos houses a variety of fish and even some species of shrimp!
    • Cenote Cristalino resembles Cenote Azul as it is a spacious, open air cenote surrounded by lush vegetation.  You never know what little creatures you’ll find.
    • Gran Cenote has an off-limits zone for the turtles that live here, but they are free to roam.  You’ll find other small fish darting about and checking you out as well, they’re all friendly though.
    • El Jardin del Eden is also an open air cenote with giant mossy rocks to rest about.  The pool is brimming with life here, mostly those adorable little sucker fish.

      Cenote Azul

**Ok, so Yal Ku is technically a lagoon, not a cenote, but it is definitely worth mentioning if you want to swim with brilliantly colored fish, sea turtles, starfish, urchins and other sea creatures.  Yal Ku is a rather expansive area with plenty of space to swim/snorkel and spots to lounge out and picnic.  Admission is around $14USD per person, making it much more expensive than entrance fees to other cenotes, but it’s definitely worth the extra dinero if you plan to spend a half or full day there.

    Yal Ku Lagoon

A few things to keep in mind before visiting a cenote:

    • Cenotes are somewhat fragile ecosystems.  Be respectful of your environment.
    • Bring your own towel.  Some places will rent them, but it’s best to bring your own if possible.
    • Some cenotes will have lockers for rent to keep personal belongings, otherwise it’s up to you to make sure your possessions are safe.
    • Refrain from using body oils, lotions, perfumes, etc. before visiting the cenote and only use biodegradale sun-block.
    • Always rinse off before entering a cenote.
    • Bring your own snorkel and mask if you have one.
    • Life jackets are available at select cenotes.
    • The earlier you go, the less likely you are to run into crowds.
    • Consider using a local tour company to take you around. (No waiting in lines for tickets, door-to-door service, no surprise fees, enjoy gazing out the window at your surroundings instead of focusing on driving and directions,  and snorkel gear is usually provided along with snacks, beverages and fun facts!)
    • Use the information above to create a list of your top choices and try to make it to more than one. (They’re all so unique!)
    • Enjoy the experience!  You are surrounded by ancient history!

  • Exploring the Tulum Ruins

    Exploring the Tulum Ruins

Tulum has become a trending vacation spot for bloggers and travelers alike in recent years.  It’s not hard to understand why.  With beautiful beaches, delicious tacos and a vibrantly rich cultural history, the Yucatan Peninsula has proven itself to be one of the hottest destinations on the planet right now (no pun intended).
    DeziStyle Tulum
While many tend to stick to the all-inclusive resorts and Eco-chic boutiques, I am here to tell you that there are some wonderful reasons to vacate the lounge chairs for an early morning excursion to the famed Tulum Ruins.   A mere 30 minute drive from Playa del Carmen (or one hour from Cancun), puts you right in the heart of the quaint little city of Tulum.  This stunning, ancient-walled city used to be home to around 6,000 Mayans between the 13th and 15th century.  Some say the energy here is still palpable.
    DeziStyle Tulum
Upon arriving, there are several yaxche (or ceiba) trees lining the pathway.  These magnificent trees are thought to be the axis mundi – a symbolic connection between the realms of heaven, earth and the underworld, not only in Mayan philosophy, but others as well.
    DeziStyle Tulum
Although we haven’t typically used tour companies in the past, we were really looking forward to having YucaTreks be our guides for the day and show us around.  It was more like having a fun (and really informational) friend take us out on an adventure.  We gained so much insight into the Mayan culture and traditions.
     (17)
We arrived just as the sun began to spill over the Mayan Riviera Coast, the weather slightly cool as the dew evaporated and the wildlife awakened.  We were greeted at the entrance by an adorable creature I’d never seen before, a white nosed coati-mundi.  It resembled something like a mix between a raccoon and a lemur and was digging away in the dirt for a delectable breakfast of worms and insects.  Unfortunately he was a little too quick to snap a good photo of him, but something tells me he hams it up for the early birds, like us, on most days.
    DeziStyle Tulum
Aside from the temperate weather, another perk of arriving early is avoiding the masses of tourists that are sure to arrive in the hours to come.  It almost felt like we had the grounds to ourselves as our guide led us from site to site, garnishing Richie and I with interesting historic tidbits along the way.
    DeziStyle Tulum

What a breathtaking view the Mayans chose as home base.  The lush palms and greenery against the turquoise blue waters were a magnificent sight to see.  The Mayans were incredibly intellectual and excelled in creative problem solving, which you’ll come to find is evident in many ways.  For example, the main “building”, El Castillo, was used as a lighthouse.  At dusk, if the captain could see light through both of the tiny windows, they could be assured they were on the correct route to shore (and would avoid the sharp coral reef barrier).   They were also highly in tune with the cyclical nature of life and death, illustrating their ideals in ancient carved stones across many of their structures.
    DeziStyle Tulum
    DeziStyle Tulum
Looking out onto the sparkling Caribbean Sea from the ruins, you’ll notice a long, white “shelf” where the waves break, not too far from the shore.  This divide in the surf is part of the Great Maya Reef, second in size to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and stretching in length to over 600 miles.  Directly in front of the El Castillo “lighthouse” is the only area of surf that does not clash against the coral reef, thanks to some brave (and mighty-lunged) Mayan swimmers who chiseled away the reef using flint rocks to provide an easier route back to land for their boats.
    DeziStyle Tulum
Although iguana has been used in some traditional dishes, don’t expect to find it too easily on the menu.  You will, however, spot them sunbathing across the grounds quite a bit.  This fellow here is gloating in all his glory after fending off the unwanted presence of another iguana in his territory.

    Tulum Ruins Tips:

    • Arrive early!  They open at 8am so get there beforehand and have your ticket ready (if you’re with a tour, choose the earliest tour time)
    • If possible, try avoiding peak days and seasons (Jan-April).  Opt for “off-days” like Monday-Wednesday, chances are you’ll encounter less tourists and have better photo ops.
    • If you are prone to mosquito bites, bring a bottle of repellent with you.
    • It heats up quickly in the morning so wear sunblock and bring a hat/sunglasses.
    • There are no restrooms at the ruins once you’re inside so take care of your business ahead of time.
    • The entry ticket cost is very reasonable, $5 USD and kids under 13 are free.  *It is recommended to have cash and exact change for the ticket counter, but if you’re with a tour, you need not worry!  Tours will have your tickets in advance.
    • The parking lot is about a 1km walk to the entrance of the site, but is quite easy and enjoyable.
    • An hour or two is plenty of time to wander around the ruins.
    • The Tulum ruins are beautiful, but it was a much more interesting experience to have a guide with us to teach us the history, culture, plant uses and animal life in the area.
    • Bring a swimsuit and take a dip in the ocean below the ruins afterwards!

“The greatest wisdom is in simplicity.  Love, respect, tolerance, sharing, gratitude, forgiveness.  It’s not complex or elaborate. The real knowledge is free. It’s encoded in your DNA.  All you need is within you.  Great teachers have said that from the beginning. Find your heart, and you will find your way.”  – Carlos Barrios, Mayan elder and Ajq’ij of the Eagle Clan

    After the ruins…

After walking around the ruins all morning, we worked up quite an appetite.  Luckily, our new friends, Eder and Cesar, were two steps ahead of us and had the perfect spot for lunch in mind.  It wasn’t long before we were pulling into our own private little slice of heaven on the beach, right on the edge of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Nature Reserve.

If you haven’t spent an afternoon lounging in the surf or sand in Tulum yet, you’re missing out.  While our lovely hosts prepared us a picnic style lunch, I took the opportunity to soak up some salt, sun and even a cerveza.

  • How do you Give Back to Mother Nature?

How do you Give Back to Mother Nature?

Throughout each year DeziStyle points out the very best of what the world has to offer, but what do we offer the world in return?

This sentiment comes just a week before Thanksgiving, a time to express our gratitude for one another and the bounty that the earth has provided us.  Unfortunately it also comes at a time when the planet is in desperate need of healing.  There is much happening around the world that tends to exist just outside of our comfort zones, so today we shall address some of the ways that we can give back to mother nature and show respect to this giant living organism we call planet earth.

Whether you “believe” in climate change or not, the impact that humans have had on our environment is undeniable.  As travelers, we are more aware of these circumstances and have either witnessed these changes firsthand or met people who have been at the receiving end of it.  As travelers, we are part of a global community that has recognized the splendor and magnitude of what it means to humbly be a part of this fragile ecosystem.  We as travelers have a duty to fulfill.  We are the crusaders that must lead by example and relay this crucial information to others.  It is simply not enough to explore and highlight only the best of what we see, as we would only being doing this planet a disservice to not also bring awareness to those uncomfortable things that people would (understandably) rather not address.

We are the crusaders that must lead by example and relay this crucial information to others.

Information is key and with that knowledge comes power — power to do something, to make a change, to be a voice.  Its easy to feel helpless when there is so much work to be done but like everything else in life, taking one step at a time will eventually lead you to where you want to go.  With that being said, here are some relatively easy ways to start contributing towards a more clean, sustainable planet in ways that are both realistic and beneficial to your overall health and happiness.  It does not take much effort on an individual basis to make a significant change in the world, but each of us needs to be involved in order to bring about that positive shift.  I know that I would never be able to look my (future) children in the face had I just sat back and watched the slow and steady disintegration of our little blue dot.

It’s important to understand what is happening and the direct effects these have on our ecosystem.  Nothing here is new information. You’ve probably even scrolled past countless articles on Facebook that touch on the subjects of climate change, but the vast amount of information out there can be overwhelming, so the goal here is to share some simple steps on how to be more conscientious of mother nature and give back all year ’round, not just once a year.  Here are some great rudimentary steps to take in the right direction.

How to start making positive changes:

    Cut back/cut out animal products.

Well, if first is the worst, I might as well get this one out of the way.  I know there will be plenty of people who will look at this and think “Ya right..not possible”.  I myself am not a vegan or even a vegetarian, but over the past year I have completely eliminated dairy from my diet (yes, even my beloved cheese), and I have significantly cut back on meat.  Hey, its a start.  The cold, hard truth of the matter is that one of the MAJOR concerns with methane and CO2 pollution in our atmosphere is a direct affect of the cattle industry in particular – be it for milk, meat or leather, the amount of land, time and resources it takes to raise these animals are seriously detrimental to the stability of our planet and the toxic amounts of methane they produce has become a significant concern.  Cattle is not the only burden, but contributes to the majority of the environmental issues regarding livestock.  On average, livestock production uses one-third of the worlds fresh water and takes up 45% of earth’s total land.  The two leading causes of rainforest destruction are livestock and feed crops.  It’s not hard to see why this is such a matter of contention.  Cutting out animals products is a big step, but it’s also an impactful one.

Reduce the amount of plastics you buy.

Plastic can take centuries to break down.  Now, I know it would be nearly impossible to function in modern society without somehow interacting with plastic in your day to day, but you can make progressive decisions about how it plays a part in your life as a consumer.  For starters, ditch the plastic bags (and even the paper ones) when you shop – Bring your own reusable bags and skip bagging your produce in individuals plastic bags.  No more buying ziplocks or plastic tupperware for leftovers – opt for glassware like mason jars or store it in dish ware.  Instead of buying packs of bottled waters, buy a reusable water bottle for each member of your family and encourage them to use that instead.  Plus, filtering your own water will likely give you higher quality H2O than most bottled water brands, not to mention the possible health hazards you’re avoiding by not using plastic products that leach into your goods.

Be aware of products that contain palm oil.

Palm oil is the most popular vegetable oil in the world for its high yield and low labor costs.  You can find palm oil (or one of the 25+ other names it goes by) in everything from food to detergents, shampoos and more.  Although the product itself is not something to be shunned, approximately 85% of palm oil comes from Indonesia and Malaysia and is not sustainably farmed.  This means there is a massive amount of large scale deforestation happening to make room for more palm oil production, resulting in the loss of habitat for orangoutangs, tigers, rhinos and other endangered species.  Additionally, the burning of timber and forest undergrowth to make room for more palm oil plantations is a huge contributing factor to CO2 emissions, essentially making Indonesia the third largest contributor to greenhouse gasses in the world.  Aside from not being particularly healthy, it’s just best to avoid products that contain it altogether.

Unplug electronics when they’re not in use.

We’ve all heard mom scold us at least once for not turning off the lights when we’re not using them.  Surely I’m not the only one.  However, we can save more energy and money by unplugging lights, appliances, and anything else that draws electricity when they’re not in use.  This also includes turning off the air conditioner or heater when you’re not home as well.  Even though an appliance may not be turned on, if its plugged in, it’s still using unnecessary power.  Plugging devices in and out can seem time consuming, but there are a couple solutions I can offer to minimize the headache.  The easiest and most cost effective way to go about this would be to use power strips.  Not only does this give you access to additional outlets but you only need to unplug one cord for multiple devices.  Another option is to purchase power strips that can shut off or turn on outlets using motion censors.

Get an eco-friendly vehicle or use alternative methods of transportation.

Unless you live somewhere like NYC, it would be pretty hard not to have a vehicle to get around with.  Luckily, more brands are making the move into the eco-friendly arena and giving their buyers more of a selection when it comes to style and capacity.  Simultaneously, there are a growing number of cities around the world that are expanding their green initiatives by creating designated bike traffic lanes and electric public transportation.  As of 2017, my hubby and I are giving up both of our cars and will resort to using services like Uber or Lyft, public transport and good ole’ fashioned bicycles to get around.

    Buy organic.  Eat organically.

Not only is eating organically better for your body, its better for the environment.  Non-organic produce is ridden with pesticides and other toxic chemicals and it’s estimated that about 90% of our country’s water is contaminated with at least one pesticide due to agricultural runoff.  Support your local farmers by buying fresh produce (this also reduces the amount of CO2 emissions produced by only needing to transport food locally) or signing up for community supported agriculture – they’ll send you a weekly box of seasonal goodies.  Better yet, grow your own!

    Ditch the toxic household cleaners.

Your typical household cleaners are loaded with toxic chemicals that are harmful to the environment and your health.  These ingredients have been linked to a myriad of health problems ranging from skin conditions to hormonal disruptions and even cancer.  There are a bunch of eco-friendly cleaning products these days but if you don’t feel like buying them, it’s also easy to make your own using basic household ingredients like white vinegar, baking soda and essential oils.  Search on Pinterest or Google for quick & organic “recipes”.

     Buy recycled products.

No need for an explanation here.  You can help the environment buy choosing brands that use recycled materials.  Everything from shoes to toilet paper to bottles and more are available locally and online, just look for the labeling.

    Reuse-Reduce-Recycle

Switch your accounts to paperless billing.

It only takes a few clicks online to sign up for paperless billing.  You’ll have less paperwork to file and you’ll save trees – easy!

    Limit air travel when possible.

This is a big one for us travelers.  Jet fuel releases a significant amount of CO2 and other pollutants in the air and every year the number of flights are increasing.  When possible, try other methods of transportation like buses, trains or by boat.  This can actually be a nice alternative that allows you to see more of the city, coastline or countryside – a huge benefit when traveling for leisure especially.

     Offset your carbon footprint.

If you feel like you’d like to give back in a way that makes you feel a little less guilty about your carbon footprint, you can pay a fee based on your own calculations, using various websites.  This levy would be put to use by helping a foundation of your choice to implement more climate change projects and awareness.  Many progressive businesses are involved in this effort on a continuous basis to offset their own carbon footprints, but why not do it on an individual basis as well?

Of course there are many more ways to limit your carbon footprint, these steps are just the beginning but are impactful when you apply them.  Anything you can do helps.  Try implementing one by one or in incremental phases such as “Meatless Mondays” or refrain from using your vehicle on weekends in favor of bicycles, walking or public transportation/carpools.

  • How to Save Money on Holiday Travel Expenses

How to Save Money on Holiday Travel Expenses

The holiday season is officially upon us and the joys of booking flights, hotels and excursions are on the horizon.  Your wallet may be anxiously anticipating the hemorrhage of cashflow that inevitably happens around this time year, but that doesn’t mean you should, too.  Paying a premium for travel is typically expected during the holidays, but there are still plenty of ways to cut back your expenditures and save the big bucks on your next trip.  Remember, always do your own research, don’t be afraid to speak up, and keep in mind that some savings may not seem like a lot, but collectively, all these little things will add up over time.

“Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.”

    DeziStyle Holiday Savings

Don’t wait to book your flights

This sounds obvious but the truth is, during some months, ticket prices can actually decrease as the date of departure draws near if there are still available seats to fill.  Unfortunately the same does not apply in busier travel months, the holidays being at the top of that list.  It is recommended to book your travel arrangements as early as possible, ideally a minimum of 4 weeks prior to travel.

Fly on the day of the holiday

For those that have family like mine, we don’t always celebrate holidays on the actual day, depending on how all of our schedules pan out.  That may seem like a major faux pas but it works for us and the cherry on top just so happens to be that we can occasionally make travel arrangements for the day of the holiday, saving us quite a bit of money in the meantime.  It pays to be flexible.

    Book hotels with free wifi

Wifi charges can certainly add up, especially if you plan to be on an extended hiatus.  Rates can fluctuate between $5-35 per day in some hotels so if you rely on an internet connection to stay in touch or catch up on work, book a room where they offer a free connection.

    Don’t double tip

It’s just what they want you to do – overlook the inconspicuous 18% service fee that many restaurants are including in the bill without being very upfront about it.  Many people, while full, content and possibly a little buzzed, tend to skim right over that part when reviewing the charges on a bill, unknowingly causing them to leave an additional 15-20% tip on top of what was already included in the tab.  Even more so, when traveling internationally, read up on customary tipping.  Some countries do not expect tips whatsoever (the service fee is already included in the price), so find out ahead of time to save you from any awkward encounters.

    Plan your own excursions

Instead of using tour companies, research the events or places you wish to visit and plan them out yourself.  On the contrary, sometimes tour companies can actually save you money by including all transportation, meals and entry fees.  Do your homework!

    Get a travel pass

Most cities offer travel passes in some way, shape or form.  Unlimited daily passes for metro stations, buses, mono-rails and trolley’s are just some of the modes of transport that usually provide these kinds of deals.  If you plan on doing a lot of sight-seeing or want the freedom to roam about effortlessly, this will save you time, money and possibly a headache.

Opt for alternative methods of transportation

Planes are the popular choice for getting from point A to B when driving isn’t realistic, but what about other options?  Flying can become pricey during the holidays, however, many cities have been amping up their public transit for those looking to travel cheaper and more efficiently.  Subways, trains, buses, or even sites like Carpool World offer some great alternatives that should save you a few pretty pennies.  Hey, every dollar counts when you’ve got an incurable case of the travel bug.

    Ship and carry on

Every time I’m standing in a long check-in line at the airport, I always ask myself why I didn’t just ship my stuff ahead of time.  Many factors would have to play out for this scenario to work successfully but indeed, it is possible to do it and save money.  First, you’ll want to consider how long and how far you’re going.  Shipping prices vary by weight and distance so you may want to consider packing up a test box with all you will need during your trip and shopping around for the best quote.  Shipping obviously works best if you are going to be visiting a residence or if it can be arranged to be delivered directly to an accommodating hotel.  One thing to consider is the possible hassle of shipping your belongings back once your trip is over, but nothing a little bit of pre-planning can’t alleviate.  Even the best airlines can charge inflated baggage costs and overage fees, so make sure to look over those details before making a decision so you can compare accuratley.

*Also, consider shipping gifts as well, or better yet, just buy gift cards instead!

Avoid airport ATM’s and currency exchange

We can’t always prevent this from happening, but as you might have guessed, ATM’s and currency exchange kiosks at the airport carry steep service charges and usually do not have the best exchange rates.  Try to change some money ahead of your travel date, at least enough to get you out of the airport and for any other incidentals while arriving in the new city.

    DeziStyle Holiday Savings

Don’t leave your vehicle in a paid parking lot

Driving to the airport may feel more convenient, but chances are, unless you live extremely far from your local airport, getting dropped off by a friend, taking a shuttle or using a ride share service will likely be more cost effective, considering you’ll be out of town for more than just a day or two.  Uber and Lyft are great examples of easy-to-use ride sharing apps that cost much less than traditional taxis (and smell better, too).  Be sure to look out for coupon codes or first-time user free rides!

    Be a snack packer!

Packing your own snacks for a flight takes a little bit of forethought but when the hunger pangs start, you’ll be happily munching on your goody bag instead of paying $20 for a dry sandwich and a bottle of water.  Bringing my own snacks have also held me over on long international flights when the food selection was less than appetizing.  Granola/protein bars, dried fruit, dark chocolate nibs, assorted veggies with hummus (they make to-go sizes now), fresh fruit with tougher, protective skins (like oranges, bananas & apples), individual size cheese bites and nuts/seeds all make for deliciously satisfying, nutritious goodies.

*Bring a water bottle or thermos in your carry-on to avoid paying premium prices on beverages by filling up at water fountains or when the refreshment cart comes by during the flight.  I never travel without my own teabags and thermos.

    Bundle and save

If you know you’re going to be requiring transportation, accommodations and/or a rental vehicle, try booking all as a package deal to receive discounts.

Beware of data & roaming charges

Long gone are the days of worrying about overage charges or international fees as a proud member of the T-Mobile family.  They are one of the only cell providers out there (in the U.S.) that provide unlimited data and free international roaming to many of the major cities around the world.  Phone calls only cost about $0.20/min but there’s really no need to incur that charge when you can simply use your free, unlimited data to make calls via WhatsApp, Skype or Google.

Age is more than just a number

For those 65 and older or students with proof of school I.D., you can boast your age with pride, in return for free or discounted admissions to many attractions, community events, and so on.

    Off days and times

As we acknowledged earlier, traveling on a national holiday can save you some dinero, but so can certain days of the week or time of departure.  A general rule of thumb when searching for the least expensive time to travel throughout the week are to look for red-eye (overnight) flights leaving on Tuesdays and Wednesday’s.

    Use your reward points

If you got ’em, use ’em!  Don’t forget to book all your travel through your most lucrative reward cards to plump up your ‘points piggy bank’, as well.

    Ask for upgrades

The squeaky wheel gets the grease!  If you don’t ask for it, you don’t get it.  Don’t be shy to ask for upgrades on flights, car rentals, and hotel stays.  Chances are, if they’re available, you’ll get bumped up, you just need to ask.

    Fly into alternative airports

When you’re flying into bigger cities, many times they will have multiple local airports to choose from.  Prices can vary greatly, even though they may only be a few miles apart.  Checking off the ‘add nearby airports’ box when researching flights will show you all the available alternative options.

Just say ‘No’ to the minibar

Tempting as it may be, giving in to the mini bar is a sure way to hike up your bill for something that would otherwise only cost you a few bucks at a convenience store.  Stock up with plenty of water and goodies before you turn in for the night.

Choose an accommodation where breakfast is included

Typically, dining in the hotel or ordering room service can be quite pricey.  I once stayed in a hotel in Barcelona that offered a 24 hour free snack bar to guests.  Everything from finger sandwiches, chips, fruit and an assortment of fresh juices, coffees and teas were conveniently placed near the lobby for our enjoyment.  Although this is more rare, it does happen once and a while.   At the very least, a nice way to save while away is to pick a place that includes complimentary breakfast in the room rate, plus you can grab some extra fruit for a midday snack, on the house.

24 Hours in Ojai | What to do, Eat, & Where to Sleep

You’ve got 24 hours in Ojai and you’ve gotta make it count.  What do you do?  Ojai seems to be one of the most under-the-radar California hotspots.  At only about 80 miles from L.A., it feels more like 800 miles away.  I’m a firm believer that sometimes you just need to ditch the big city and decompress…even if only for 24 hours.

    What to do

    Bart’s Books

Bart’s Books came about as Richard Bartinsdale’s collection of books grew so massive, he constructed a series of shelves along the sidewalk to share his passion with the community, leaving only a tin can out in lieu of a cash register.  Since then, he’s cycled through more than a million books.  Today, Bart’s Books is recognized as the largest independently owned outdoor bookstore in the USA.

    Meditation Mount

Whether you come for the view or seek solace on the lawn, this non-profit organization has been dedicated to empowering & enlightening individuals with creative meditation, community based events & inspirational programs since it’s opening in 1971.

    DSC03170 (1)

My limited time in town only permitted me to explore the property at midday but many love to come for the well-known pink sunsets of Ojai as well.  As you enter the Peace Portal (made from 1,200 year old reclaimed Douglas fir), it is intended for you to feel a sense of energetic transformation and a sense of new possibilities.

You’re free to roam about.  Stroll the gardens, do yoga on the lawn, pop by the koi pond or visit the meditation room.

You can catch a glimpse of all the orchards in the valley below, too.  The best parts about Meditation Mount are the pure serenity, fresh air and expansive views.

    Bookends Bookstore

It’s apparent that the community of Ojai really knows how to take things slow and enjoy the company of a good book.  Bookends (on the opposite end of town from Bart’s Books), takes a different approach to your common bookstore.  On the property sits this 1960’s Airstream trailer and old, renovated church, both filled with…you guessed it, books.  Find one you like and kick back under the shade of the trees while you sip a fresh brewed coffee from next door.

    Catch a Sunset

There are a couple spots to catch a great sunset in Ojai.  Aside from Meditation Mount there are hiking trails that can set you up for a photo-worthy golden hour.

    Where to Eat

    The Farmer and the Cook

After the drive in, you may have a hankering for a snack.  Chances are that your hotel check in may not be until 3 or 4pm so why not use that as a great excuse to pop in for your first treat at The Farmer and the Cook.

    DeziStyle Ojai

Choose from a delicious array of menu items (like this açai bowl), salad bar or on-site market filled with local goods.

    Azu Mediterranean Restaurant

Mediterranean food is some of my favorite in the world so I had to try Azu.  They have a regular dining area and a cozy, dimly lit bar where Richie and I shacked up for dinner.  It was too hard to decide on one thing so we ordered a handful of tapas.  See our favorites below.

Let me just stress that Ojai is still a small city.  When you’re coming from a place like Los Angeles, you’re used to restaurants catering to a late night crowd, but many places in Ojai close on the early side so always make sure you check ahead of time so you don’t miss out on the places you want to try.

    Knead Baking Company

Known for their in-house, freshly baked goods and artisan crafted breakfast & lunch specials, Knead bakery sits tucked away just off east Ojai Avenue.  This family owned and operated joint features their own specialty “Knead Bread” on the weekends, made only from unbleached, organic flour, whole grains, extra virgin olive oil, kosher salt  + fresh herbs.  (sigh) Can you smell it?

    Ojai Tortilla House

This was by far my favorite meal of the whole trip.  Surprisingly it was not only the most delicious and authentic, but also the most inexpensive.  What a pleasant surprise indeed.  As many establishments seem to be in Ojai, this restaurant is also family owned and operated, mom is even seen making fresh rosemary tortillas behind the counter.

    DeziStyle Ojai

It may look like any other street taco, but these pollo tacos were definitely anything but average.   The slaw was on point, the fresh salsa was kickin’ and the flavor was finger-licking good! The hint of rosemary in the soft, warm tortillas was definitely a nice touch, too. I opted for the spiciest salsa and boy did I get it.  Luckily I had this tall refreshing watermelon agua fresca to wash it all down.

Don’t expect anything fancy here, this is simply a burrito bar with good vibes and great food.  *Standing room only

For those seeking a little more luxury, the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa is where you want to be.  It too has recently undergone some upgrades but has managed to maintain an authentic feeling stemming from it’s origins in 1923.

Where do I begin?  I had no idea that I’d love The Broad museum as much as I did.  Living in L.A. for the last decade+, I’ve frequented other galleries like LACMA, The Getty Center and MOCA but how…HOW I ask myself, did I not make it to The Broad until now??   I suppose late is better than never, but now I must share with you just how incredible this museum truly is and hope it inspires you to make a stop here the next time you find yourself in Downtown Los Angeles.

I was tickled to see some artwork from Keith Haring in the building.  He was one of the first artists that I really payed attention to when I was fully immersed in the art scene as a kid.  His wild, nonsensical paintings leave your eyes darting around, discovering something new in every piece of the canvas, and your mind trying to decipher what exactly its looking at.

Jeff Koons’ “balloon” sculptures have got to be the most popular exhibit at The Broad right now, after the Infinity Room that is.  His work seems to bring out the inner child in us all.  How can you not feel a sense of giddy nostalgia when you stand in front of a giant shiny blue “balloon animal”?

I love, love, LOVED this installation!!  I imagine this is what it would be like to float through our universe.  It’s undoubtedly the most popular exhibit in the entire museum, no one can deny that.  It’s brilliant, mysterious and above all, incredibly unique!   Please take note though, that there is always a very long wait for this attraction (around 160 minutes+) so I strongly urge you to go directly to the reservations kiosk as soon as you enter The Broad.  This is a free exhibit to experience so it’s definitely worth putting your name down and then taking your time to peruse the rest of the museum while you wait your turn.  They will text you directly when you’re name is up and once inside the Infinity Room, you’ll get about 45 seconds to a minute to have the room to yourself.  –Make sure all your camera settings are ready to go ahead of time!  If you aren’t tech savvy, set your camera on automatic and keep the flash off.
